We are pleased to announce Barthélémy Toguo's new exhibition at Robert Grunenberg Berlin.

Opening: 21st of September 2018
22 September - 30 November 2018
Robert Grunenberg Berlin

In his first-ever solo exhibition at a German gallery, the Cameroonian artist undertakes a critical examination of the globalized present’s political climate as well as the psychological implications of the human condition. Addressing social and environmental issues, his works are fueled by his personal experience as an African in Europe. His studies of urgent challenges such as discrimination, alienation, and cross-border relations transcend cultural distinctions.

Besides installations encompassing photography, performance, and video art, Toguo integrates enigmatic watercolors into his output that figure as poetic vessels of hope amid the social and political critique his oeuvre articulates.

LOSING MY VIRGINITY

Please join us for the Opening Reception of  Losing My Virginity, a group show featuring artists Stefan Knauf, Paul Levack, Jan Zöller and Die Römischen Votzen:
Giulietta Ockenfuß and Sonja Yakovleva

Losing My Virginity features five distinct positions by artists transforming into their latest iteration. Graduating, among other things, means growing from the position of a disciple into a teacher of one’s own practice. The fluidity that results from the new-found freedoms of total self-determination and actualization foregrounds radical modes of self-expression. This immediacy of expression is often unmatched later on in the artist’s oeuvre, also due to a constant refinement of artistic practice.
Thus, the end of art school also marks the beginning of a transformation: This potent moment - when artists apply their learned knowledge and skills to the open field, or toss it aside in favor of a gut feeling - is the focus of Losing My Virginity, Robert Grunenberg’s sophomore exhibition at his eponymous gallery space.

The palm tree is the last major idol standing. Across continents, religions, and centuries, it tells stories of prosperity, peace, and spiritual salvation. No other motif signals these promises of happiness more compellingly than the palm. Ubiquitous in advertising and on social media, it conjures up visions of luxury and glamour, of the jet-set life and eternal sunshine. The world’s most widely exported class of plants, it is also a symbol of globalization. And visual artists are certainly not immune to its visual allure and metaphoric potential (...)
